Frequently Asked Questions
What is gelatin and where does the gelatin in your products come from?
Gelatin is an animal protein commonly used to make capsules that can deliver measured quantities of products. Our two-piece hard-shell gelatin capsules use pharmaceutical quality gelatin derived from the processing of collagen. Collagen is a fibrillary protein found in connective tissues (generally the hides) and in the bones of animals.
Our pharmaceutical quality gelatin capsules (powder filled) are typically made of a combination of beef (bovine) and pork (porcine) gelatins. Bovine sources must be BSE/TSE free. The gelatin is predominantly sourced from North America, but in some cases may also be sourced from Southeast or East Asia (primarily Thailand, Indonesia, or Japan) or South America (primarily Columbia).
What is the source of cellulose in your products?
For vegetarians and vegans we offer certain products in vegetable capsules. Our vegetable capsules are derived from either plant cellulose (specifically hydroxypropyl methylcelluose HPMC from pine trees) typically from North America or France) or vegetable polysaccharides (pullulan from tapioca) typically from Mexico or Japan.
What exactly are Butyrate and Propionate?
Butyrate and propionate are short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). They are made in the lower colon by bacteria and taken up by colonocytes, the cells that line the colon. SCFAs then become an important food source for those cells. Lacking good bacteria in our colon, such as when we take antibiotics, can lead to an insufficient supply of short chain fatty acids.

Probiotic: A live microorganism that provides health benefits.

While present in some whole foods (particularly fermented foods), probiotics can also be taken daily to supplement the good bacteria already living naturally in the digestive tract. Different types of probiotic bacteria, such as Bifidobacterium, support digestive health.
