Frequently asked questions
What exactly are Butyrate and Propionate?
Butyrate and propionate are short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). They are made in the lower colon by bacteria and taken up by colonocytes, the cells that line the colon. SCFAs then become an important food source for those cells. Lacking good bacteria in our colon, such as when we take antibiotics, can lead to an insufficient supply of short chain fatty acids.
